All About Cottages

Cottages are dwellings that are typically found in rural or semi-rural areas. It is built around natural surroundings, and most of the time the surrounding fauna intruding into the actual living space. The term cottages also means a small and cosy place of living, often located near a body of water.

These hut-type dwellings were christened cottages, mainly because they were the dwelling quarters of cotters, a group of people belonging to the serfs’ category during feudal times, who earned their livelihood working as peasants. Cotters did not own their own land; instead they worked on their lords’ fields. In return, they were given huts and gardens, and sometimes even a small share of their lords’ harvests. Later, with the Industrial Revolution, weavers’ as well as miners’ cottages were also developed.

There are slight differences and some distinguishing characters in the cottages that are located at different places. Canadian cottages are distinguished from others, because they are mostly located next to a lake or even the ocean, basically in areas of wilderness. They are mostly rented out to vacationers and are considered popular tourist draws. Used fro skiing, hiking and fishing trips, they are also called ‘cabins’.

In Finland, on the other hand, cottages are mainly residential buildings that are used as holiday homes or a relaxed dwelling. The main characteristic about cottages in Finland is that they are made of logs and they too are situated next to a water body. In Hong Kong, they are three storied brick structures, and commonly used as relaxing and rejuvenating getaways from the hustle and bustle of the city.

UK is famous for its holiday cottages. They are well equipped and comfortable buildings that can accommodate couples as well as large family groups. UK cottages are the prettiest cottages and have well-tended and beautiful gardens attached to them. They are usually fully furnished with self catering options as well.

Cottages have today become a symbol of a relaxed and comfortable way of living in the lap of nature, and provide respite to city dwellers from the hectic and stressed contemporary lifestyle.

Holiday Cottages in the Lake District

With impressive scenery that includes breathtaking views of rolling English countryside, vast expanses of water, flourishing flora and fauna and thriving wildlife, the Lake District is one of the most beautiful corners of the United Kingdom and offers a truly idyllic location that make it perfect for a break away.

If you’re looking for some time out and to escape the big city smoke then the Lake District has some of the largest areas of unspoilt land in all of Western Europe and offers a complete contrast to the daily grind of many UK towns and cities. There is no better way to make the most of the surrounding beauty and peace and tranquillity by opting to have a self-catering holiday by renting a traditional cottage.

No matter how long you stay the Lake District is so vast that it has something for everyone so you can just as easily enjoy a completely isolated break to take in the wonders and natural beauty of your surroundings as you can participate in the plethora of outdoor activities that define much of the tourist offering in the area.

A self-catering break offers you a great deal of flexibility and with accommodation dotted amongst the traditional market towns of the area such as Keswick or Ambleside, sitting on the hillsides overlooking the magnificent “romantic” lake of Ullswater or within one of the most popular quaint local villages such as Grasmere, there is something to suit all tastes and budgets.

Lake District Cottages will traditionally be fully equipped with all mod-cons including home entertainment systems and televisions, as well as music systems in addition to kitchen white goods such as washing machines, dishwashers, microwaves and some many even have the added luxury of a hot tub. Many also offer catering as well as self-catering options giving you the flexibility to tailor your holiday depending on your needs. Cottage accommodation also offers more of a homely feel and many choose this type of accommodation particularly in the Lake District as a way of really experiencing local life that you simply do not get in larger hotel chains or resorts.

An average search of Lake District Holidays accommodation will provide a cross section of properties from the traditional thatched cottage that would sleep a family of 4, to a smaller modern cottage to sleep 2 or you can also find clusters of cottages to provide accommodation for larger groups of people within the same area.

Self Catering Cottages – Let’s Stay in Paradise

Traveling and freedom are two words that we could seldom relate to each other. Both the journey as well as the staying in a new place has their own share of hurdles and hassles. But that spoils all the fun of traveling. Therefore people have come up with various solutions to overcome such problems and provide travelers a hassles free journey as well as stay. Self catering cottages are one step towards the same purpose.

Self catering cottages, as you must have guessed from the name, are cottages or apartments where the travelers can stay and enjoy life in their own style. They are as good as your own home, because here you can move around, work and relax in any way you want to. You have lots of space to yourself, unlike the rooms of any plush multi star hotels, yet the prices are rock bottom when compared with such hotel rooms.

And if that is not enough, then here is more for you. Unlike your home back in your town, you can choose the location of your self catering cottages as per your mood or requirements. You can opt for sea side cottages if you are in the mood to romance the sun, sea and sand. You can select remote self catering cottages, if the heavy work schedule compels you to escape it. Or you can also select a cottage closer to nature, if your doctor prescribes you fresh air.

That’s not all you can select different types of self catering accommodations like self catering with pets and self catering with pool inside. There are also self catering facilities for a huge group who really want to rock together, as well as just a nice couple wanting to spent some quality time together. Options are galore, only you have to click and tell your agent or any web based supplier, and there you are.

A Holiday Cottage Is the Best Choice of Accommodation

Holiday cottages are becoming more and more used by holidays makers, people are now more likely to use a holiday cottage retreat than any other form of accommodation such as hotels or caravan. The reason that we have seen an increase in the amount of people that are changing to cottage retreats is because of the fact that it is more confidential, private and safer than staying in a hotel. We have all heard the horror stories about money being taken out of peoples rooms while they are away as well as other valuable items such as jewellery, this is less of a scenario in cottages as you will be the only one in the accommodation during your period of stay, there is usually no cleaners around until your contract is over.

Basically a holiday cottage is a one storey house which is made available for tourists to rent during the holiday season. Most holiday retreats usually have around 2-3 bedrooms but you should always double check whether or not they do with the person or company that is letting them out. Another fact to remember is what sort of accommodation are you actually looking for, if you are planning to spend all of your day outside then you will not really need any modern features, as they will be going to waste. But if on the other hand you decide that you will be spending a lot of time inside you may want to look out for features such as a unique fitted kitchen with all the modern compliances, satellite TV a telephone, internet access and other modern luxuries.

Another major factor to keep into account is the location, you must decide if you would like to stay closer to the beach or close to a city centre. As if you do not have regular transport it may be quite hard to get around. The best cottages can be found in village retreats where they are one with nature, you get all the traditional features of a cottage plus the tranquillity of nature at its best.

Finally do not forget to ask about prices as an initial price quoted may not include bills, you should also ask the owner if there is any insurance in place, as if you incur any breakages you do not want to be left liable for the cost as it may work out very expensive.
